Two of Winnipeg's most habitual teenage car thieves marked the start of 2011 behind bars after crashing a speeding, stolen vehicle into a snowbank on New Year's Eve, police said.
Police said at about 7 p.m. Dec. 31, the vehicle was seen speeding through red lights and stop signs in the area of Selkirk Avenue and King Edward Street.
Officers used a spike belt to successfully blow out one of the vehicle's tires, but it kept hurtling along the road, reaching speeds of about 130 km/h, said police.
The driver, a 19-year-old man, eventually lost control and smacked into a snowbank. He and a 17-year-old boy ran from the scene, police said, but were arrested not far from the vehicle.
Police identified the two suspects as being high-risk auto thieves with multiple prior convictions for auto-theft related crimes. They each face charges including theft over $5,000, police said.
The 19-year-old was also allegedly found in possession of cocaine, according to police.
Both were held in custody, police said.
