A Winnipeg police officer escaped injury when he was dragged by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunk driver on New Year's Day.

Officers on patrol at about 4 p.m. CT near Keewatin Street and Alexander Avenue noticed a vehicle being driven erratically and pulled it over, police said Sunday.

The 31-year-old man behind the wheel initially put the vehicle in park but, while speaking to an officer, put it in drive and began accelerating, police said.

The officer reached into the window to grab the man but was dragged about 10 metres before the vehicle crashed into a snowbank and became stuck.

Police arrested the driver and charged him with assaulting a police officer, impaired driving, driving while disqualified and public mischief. Police said the man was wanted on three arrest warrants at the time.

Police didn't identify the driver, who was being held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
