Senate reviews of Kagan generally good
WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- Various senators gave U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan generally good reviews Thursday after she made a round of courtesy calls on Capitol Hill.

Kagan, the current U.S. solicitor general, reportedly raised some eyebrows when she told senators that Senate confirmation hearings for the high court have degenerated into political-posturing sessions that don't shed much light on the nominee's true qualifications.

Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., told ABC News that Kagan remarked that "the last several hearings … have been pretty superficial."

Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., told The Boston Globe that he was satisfied with Kagan's explanation of her reasoning for barring military recruiters from the Harvard Law campus while she was dean.

A potentially key meeting was with Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., who opposed Kagan's nomination for solicitor general. Specter told Politico that he was reassured after spending 30 minutes chatting with Kagan.
