'Shrek' No. 1 for third week
LOS ANGELES, (UPI) -- It won't stay there forever after but "Shrek Forever After" is No. 1 in U.S. theaters for the third weekend in a row, Box Office Mojo said Sunday.
The animated children's movie took in another $25.3 million this weekend for a three-week total of $183 million, estimated gross gate receipts show.
Two new movies broke in at Nos. 2 and 3: "Get Him to the Greek" tallied $17.4 million and "Killers" earned $16.1 million. "Get Him to the Greek," a comedy about a record company intern, stars Russell Brand and Jonah Hill. "Killers," a comedy about a couple who may have assassins living next door, stars Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara.
"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" slipped from third to No. 4 with $13.9 million in ticket sales, while "Sex and the City 2" fell three spots from second to No. 5 with $12.65 million in estimated gate receipts.
Another new film, "Marmaduke," opened at No. 6 with $11.3 million in receipts. The family-geared comedy stars Owen Wilson as the voice of the Great Dane Marmaduke and Emma Stone as the voice of his mixed-breed pal Mazie.
"Iron Man 2" fell three spots to No. 7 with $7.8 million in sales.
"Splice," a horror-thriller co-written and directed by Vincenzo Natali, debuted at No. 8 with $7.45 million in receipts.
"Robin Hood," at $5.1 million, and "Letters to Juliet," at $3 million, rounded out the Top 10.
Dropping out of the top tier were "Date Night," "Just Wright," "How to Train Your Dragon" and "MacGruber."
