South African official seeks 'Net porn ban
CAPE TOWN, South Africa, (UPI) -- The South African deputy minister of Home Affairs said he is researching the possibility of a ban on pornography distributed on the Internet and cellphones.

Deputy Minister Malusi Gigaba said he has been in contact with the South African Law Reform Commission to discuss the legality of such a measure, the BBC reported Friday.

"Cars are already provided with brakes and seat belts. ... There is no reason why the Internet should be provided without the necessary restrictive mechanisms built into it," Gigaba said.

The official said he has had talks with the Justice Alliance for South Africa, which has also authored a draft bill seeking a digital pornography ban.

Graham Cluley of British computer security company Sophos said other countries have failed in attempts to completely ban Internet pornography.

"One wonders how on earth a democracy like South Africa would be able to introduce such a system, as it's not as though the state has 100 percent control over telecommunications," he said.
