Hartford, Conn. - A student at James Naylor Elementary in Hartford has been diagnosed with tuberculosis, the city announced today.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, TB is a disease that is spread through the air from one person to another and could be fatal if not treated properly.
The student has not been identified, but they are undergoing treatment.
Health officials have started to identify those who have been exposed and they will begin TB testing at the school on October 19.
"We are taking all the proper precautionary measures to make sure that we identify all people who might be at risk," said Dr. Kurt Myers, the district's medical director. "We recognize that this is a contagious disease, but one that is controllable with antibiotics."
Informational sessions for parents have also been scheduled.
