Where Are the $40 Boxes?

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin has asked consumer retailers about the lack of $40 digital-to-analog converter boxes available at retail, a price point that would be covered by the federal government's $40 digital TV converter box program.

In a letter sent to the Consumer Electronics Retailers Coalition, Martin said, "we all have hoped that a manufacturer would produce a converter box that would be available for $40, thus enabling television viewers to purchase a box for no cost, other than local sales tax." The FCC chairman asked that member retailers with the organization, especially major stores, carry at least one box with an analog pass-through capability that sells for $40.

Also in his letter, Martin pointed to the EchoStar/DISH $40 box for sale, yet "none of the mass retailers are carrying the box and they do not plan to carry it," he said.
