FLUSHING, N.Y. —
A woman is in police custody for allegedly throwing a 2-year-old boy from a balcony, according to the Queens District Attorney's office.
The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at an apartment building located on Leavitt St. in Flushing.
Young Jerry Zhao was pronounced dead at New York Hospital shortly after going into cardiac arrest.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown identified the woman as 53-year-old Xiao Aiu Cai, who he said is on medication to treat her deep depression.
Cai reportedly uttered something then threw the child from the seventh floor apartment terrace. Reports also say she was arguing with her daughter moments before the horrific attack.
The toddler's mother became so hysterical she tried to jump off the the same balcony, but was pulled back and restrained by others in the apartment.
She ran downstairs to craddle her son, who was bleeding from the back of his head, Passerby Chad Jenkins attempted to apply first aid to the toddler.
Brown said Cai, who is not related to the boy, lived in the apartment with the child and his mother.
Cai is charged with second-degree murder, which carries a sentence of 25-years to life behind bars.
