WHITE ROCK, Okla. -- An 11-year-old boy is recovering after being shot in the face by a 13-year-old girl, police said.

It happened on Monday night near the town of White Rock in Lincoln County.

Detectives said they believe the girl that shot the boy, who was his neighbor, did not intend to hurt him. Lincoln County police said the boy is lucky to be alive.

Deputies said two brothers stole their parents’ gun out of a safe and went for target practice. The boys found the key to the safe and the father didn’t know, police said.

Investigators said the boys brought two friends along with them, a 13-year-old girl and her brother who was 6.

The boy set the gun down and detectives said the teen girl picked it up and pointed it at the 11-year-old boy’s face and pulled the trigger.

"He's very lucky, you know, it was a .22-caliber rifle. … The entrance was right here below the lip on the left side, exited right here through the jaw bone,” said Lincoln County Sheriff Charlie Doughterty.

Originally, police said the boys lied about what happened and told their parents the 11-year-old had fallen on exposed nails.

Police said after detectives questioned them, the truth came out.

Doughterty said the teen girl came forward at school and told the principal what had happened.

Investigators questioned the parents and said they believe it was all just an accident.

"As a far as this case, I don't see how mom or dad could have done anything different,” said Doughterty.

The district attorney will decide whether or not to press charges.
