Can I reset a printer cartridge manually? Read more...?

I have a Lexmark Z1300 and just ran out of black ink. I easily filled it up with my own ink but the printer still tells me it is empty. I know there is a smart chip involved but how does the printer know when I am putting a new cartridge in vs. a refilled one? Also, if my only choice (other than buying a chip resetter) is to put in a new cartridge, would I be able to quickly switch the new one with the refilled one? Since the new cartridge would "reset" the printer, would it stay reset after switching with the refill?

I am not too familiar with lexmark. I have epson printer that does the same. Its not the printer but the cartridge chip that is set to empty that needs to be reprogram. An ink chip resetter would solved that and would easily set the ink level to full. Another way is a software or program, there is one for epson free (so i dont need a resetter), im not sure for lexmark. Try searching the internet. That is called swapping, (simply switching) and No, it wouldn't work because when you insert again the cartridge the printer would still read it as empty.
