ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputy was killed Friday during a car crash near the intersection of Carlisle and Gibson boulevards, according to Albuquerque police.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department identified the deputy as Dean Miera, 48. Miera was a nine-year veteran of the department. He is survived by his wife, four children and five grandchildren.

Sheriff Manny Gonzales said Miera was on his way to serve an eviction notice when he was hit. Albuquerque police said Miera was in an unmarked unit that is used as an undercover vehicle. The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m.

A semitruck, Miera's vehicle, and a small white 4-door car are the focal point of the investigation.

Witnesses and police said the white car pulled out of a Valero gas station. The semitruck tried to avoid hitting it and ended up jumping the curb and hitting the deputy's car.

Albuquerque police said at a press conference Friday afternoon that a German national, in town for a conference in Santa Fe, was the driver of the white car. That driver's name was not released. Police believe driver inattention was the cause of the accident.

The semitruck driver and the driver of the white car were not injured, police said.

The intersection of Carlisle and Gibson is currently closed as police and rescue crews clean up the fatal accident. Avoid the area if at all possible. Currently, traffic is backing up in the area.

The intersection remained closed until about 5:20 p.m. as police processed the scene.

Kirtland Elementary School is nearby, but dismissal times remained unaffected.

Action 7 News has a crew on the scene and this story will be updated as further information becomes available.
