DIRECTV, DISH Respond to Hurricane Needs

During the weekend, DIRECTV launched a dedicated 24/7 emergency information channel for Gulf Coast residents who may have been affected by Hurricane Gustav.

The channel, similar to one launched in the wake of Hurricane Katrina three years ago, provided maps that tracked the storm, evacuation routes and ride information, relief agency information that provided phone numbers and Web addresses for the Red Cross, FEMA, Salvation Army and other organizations, shelter openings, and other tidbits of information.

DIRECTV said it was working with local, state and federal officials to make the information available to those in the path of the hurricane. The network was made available to all DIRECTV customers.

As for DISH Network, the company said it has installed about 10 shelters with its small dish offering. Also, DISH said it is sending additional techs to the Gulf Coast area to get customers up and running as quickly as possible with satellite TV service.
