Good Samaritans rescue drowning man

FORT COLLINS, Colo., (UPI) -- The Colorado State Patrol Thursday credited two Good Samaritans with saving the life of a drowning man whose car had plunged into a canal.

The State Patrol said Christopher Lyons was the first to enter the canal after seeing the overturned car in which Bradley Hill, 41, of Fort Collins was trapped underwater Wednesday afternoon.

The State Patrol said Lyons began to drag Hill out of the canal when a second Good Samaritan, Martin Murphy, entered the water to help. The State Patrol said Lyons stated Hill "coughed up water after I brought him to the surface."

Hill was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for moderate injuries. He was charged with careless driving and drunken driving.

The State Patrol said Lyons is in the U.S. Army and is in transition between assignments in Georgia and Hawaii. He was in Colorado to enroll his son in college.

Murphy is a small business owner who was on his way home when he observed the spotted the accident, the State Patrol said.

The State Patrol expressed thanks to the Good Samaritans "for their quick actions and determination," and issued this warning to others who might drink and drive: "There may not be two Good Samaritans there to save you."
