The body of an elderly Nova Scotia man missing since Monday was found floating in the Northumberland Strait, near the Confederation Bridge early Thursday afternoon, police say.

The Amherst Police Department said no foul play is suspected and the victim's name will not be released at the request of his family.

"One of our officers went over to where the body was located and through photograph they confirmed that the body was the gentleman who was reported missing," said Ian Naylor, deputy chief with the Amherst Police Department.

At about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, RCMP in Prince Edward Island responded with the Canadian Coast Guard out of Summerside to a report of an adult male body in the water.

East Prince RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Eveleigh said a local fisherman called the coast guard, saying he thought he saw a body in the water near the New Brunswick side of the bridge.

The body was taken to New Brunswick, Eveleigh said, and a coroner is now investigating the cause of death.

The 81-year-old man was reported missing by his wife on Monday afternoon after he left his Amherst home at around 8 a.m. and did not return.

His vehicle was found parked on a bridge over a river in Port Howe, west of Pugwash, Cumberland County RCMP Const. Dal Hutchinson said Tuesday.

"One of the local residents observed a splash in the water near the bridge where the vehicle was located, but we don't have any other information to support that," Hutchinson said at the time.

He said the keys were in the car's ignition system but the vehicle's engine was not running.

The search for the man was called off Tuesday night.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the East Prince office of the RCMP at 902-436-9300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-TIPS(8475).
