RCMP rescued a woman in the Northumberland Strait early Wednesday morning after responding to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Confederation Bridge.

Prince District RCMP received a report of a vehicle abandoned on the bridge about one kilometre from the New Brunswick side at 12:34 a.m., and arrived at the scene a few minutes later.

A coast guard search and rescue vessel was dispatched from Summerside while bridge officials dispatched one of their vessels from Borden.

Conditions on the bridge were very foggy making visibility very difficult, police said in a news release. An investigation revealed that the vehicle came on the bridge from New Brunswick.

After being on the scene for close to two hours, at 2:24 a.m., police heard screaming coming from the water. They were able to communicate with a woman in the water, who was drifting with the current around the base of the bridge.

Where the police were standing the bridge is approximately 35 metres above the water.

A 24-year-old New Brunswick woman was rescued by the bridge vessel at 2:55 a.m. and taken to Prince County Hospital. She was treated for stage two hypothermia, and is now in stable condition.
