MLB: Chicago White Sox 5, Oakland 1

OAKLAND, Calif., Mark Buehrle went the distance for a second straight start Friday, allowing four hits and lifting the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 victory over Oakland.

Buehrle (9-8) pitched nine innings in his previous start, taking the loss in a 3-2 decision to Minnesota.

He took a shutout into the seventh Friday before Oakland produced its only run on back-to-back doubles from Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jack Cust.

The White Sox had lost four of their previous six, but the win Friday boosted them 2 1/2 games in front of second-place Detroit and three games ahead of Minnesota in the American League Central.

Chicago had only a 3-1 lead going into the ninth before A.J. Pierzynski provided some insurance with a two-run single. They were the only Chicago runs driven in with a base hit.

Carlos Quentin had two RBI, one of them on a sacrifice fly and another on a groundout. Another Chicago run scored on an error.

Trevor Cahill (9-4) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings.
