ST. LOUIS, (UPI) -- Ryan Ludwick's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth was the game-winner Tuesday, pacing the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 decision over Washington.

The Cards also got a two-run shot from Felipe Lopez en route to a two-game sweep of the Nationals, and remain a half-game behind the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central.

Chris Carpenter (5-1) scattered nine hits, allowing only one earned run through eight innings while striking out five.

Ryan Franklin picked up his ninth save, surviving a Skip Schumaker fielding error to toss a scoreless ninth inning.

The Nationals dropped their fifth straight despite tying the game in the eighth inning on Ian Desmond's RBI single.

Tyler Clippard (7-3) was saddled with loss after giving up the homer to Ludwick.
