Police in northern Labrador took a man into custody early Tuesday morning after they surrounded his home for several hours.
RCMP in Nain were called to the home around 9:30 p.m. Monday because a man inside was threatening to kill himself.
"Upon arrival, police heard two rifle shots and the perimeter of the house was secured," the force said in a statement early Tuesday.
Neighbours and people at a hotel and bar also were evacuated from the scene.
RCMP used a telephone to communicate with the man, and said family members helped persuade him into surrendering early Tuesday. Police said alcohol likely played a role in the incident.
The man, 41, was arrested on charges that include dangerous use of a firearm, mischief and possession of a firearm while prohibited.
Police said he was expected to appear Tuesday in provincial court in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
