An inmate at the Bowden Institution has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fellow prisoner's killing last weekend, RCMP say.

Tung David Louie was stabbed on Sunday morning at the 500-prisoner federal facility 100 kilometres north of Calgary. He later died at Innisfail Hospital.

A 33 year old man will make his first court appearance in Red Deer on Friday.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate Louie's death. Louie was less than two years into a 12-year sentence for weapons and drug offences and robbery.
