Satellite Delivers for Olympics

The Olympics may have ended last Sunday, but commercial satellite operators continue to calculate the amount of hours - and video traffic - they generated during the 17 days of competition in Beijing.

The Satellite Industry Association added up some of the commercial satellite efforts and released results from its findings this week.

According to SIA, SES AMERICOM delivered Olympics coverage to 113 million U.S. television households in both high-def and standard definition for the NBC family of channels. Transmissions originated from AMC-1, AMC-18, AMC-10 and AMC-11, the group says.

Intelsat provided broadcasts of the games to consumers in Latin America and Europe. Intelsat delivered more than 12,000 hours of live coverage and recorded highlights to Latin American viewers, says SIA.

Intelsat has provided satellite coverage of every Olympics since 1968, according to SIA.
