Two men found hiding aboard a container ship in Halifax after a 10-day journey across the North Atlantic from Liverpool are expected to face a detention review Monday.
The hearing for the men, who are being detained at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, will determine whether they will be released on certain conditions.
The two were found Wednesday aboard the Atlantic Concert after the Swedish-owned ACL vessel arrived in the Nova Scotia capital. Their names haven't been released.
The vessel left for New York about 6:30 a.m. local time Saturday. Canada Border Services Agency officials detained the two, who are claiming refugee status. The agency has said little about the two.
Border agents then deployed a specialized team to search for others possibly hidden on the ship, but no other stowaways were found.
Julie Chamagne, executive director of the Halifax Refugee Clinic, which was contacted by the agency after the two were discovered aboard the ship, said Friday they were being detained on immigration grounds "for lack of identification or perhaps because they're considered a flight risk."
