Star Choice Grows Subs, HD Services

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Star Choice, the Canadian satellite TV service operated by north of the border cable giant Shaw Communications, said it added 1,736 customers during the company's fiscal fourth quarter, taking its final subscriber tally to 892,528 as of Aug. 31.

Subscriber growth during the fiscal year for Star Choice amounted to 12,943, representing a 1.5 percent increase in the service's customer base during the 12-month period, Shaw said.

Star Choice kept up with efforts to expand its high-def business during the fiscal year. The service's HD customer base increased by about 100,000 during the 12 months, the company said.

Star Choice carries 46 HD channels, Shaw said.

Service revenue for Shaw's satellite division was $185 million for the quarter, up 7 percent when compared to the same period last year. The improvement was attributed to rate increases and customer growth. Service operating income for the unit before amortization jumped 13 percent to $67 million during the quarter, Shaw said.
