U.K. explorer to be charged in car crash

MANCHESTER, England, (UPI) -- British veteran explorer Sir Ranulph Feinnes has been charged with reckless driving after his car collided with two others in England, authorities say.

The crash near Manchester left Feinnes dazed and bloodied, and injured two other people including a 5-year-old child, The Times of London reported Monday.

The day before the accident, Feinnes, 66, had completed a nighttime, 42-mile High Peak Marathon in Derbyshire, where teams of four test their endurance tackling difficult terrain, the newspaper said.

Feinnes' Jaguar sedan hit two cars before coming to rest near a restaurant on a highway.

The driver of one car suffered collapsed lungs, broken ribs and a broken leg, and a child in the second car received minor injuries, police said.

A Crown Prosecution Service lawyer said Feinnes, the oldest Briton to reach the summit of Mount Everest, would be charged.

"I have concluded that there is sufficient evidence, and it is in the public interest, to charge Sir Ranulph Fiennes with driving without due care and attention," said reviewing lawyer Nicholas Beckett.
