DIRECTV's Carey: Things Still Good with Liberty

It doesn't look like the honeymoon will end any time soon between DIRECTV and Liberty Media.

At the Liberty Media investor conference Friday, DIRECTV CEO Chase Carey reiterated the view that the DBS platform continues to have a good relationship with its controlling stakeholder. The working environment between the companies "is still a good one at this point," Carey said.

"It is true that we do get an appropriate level of autonomy to run the business, to make the decisions that we should make," he added.

At the conference, Carey said the DIRECTV brand "has never been stronger," and that the company is ready to "take the business to another level." He said the DBS service continues to encounter an increasingly competitive environment, but stressed that the company is ready to take on its cable and telco video challengers.

Carey also said the company is happy with its strong focus on video. "At the end of the day, it's the business that you want to be in," he said.

Going forward, DIRECTV plans to focus on potential growth areas, including MDUs, commercial opportunities, ethnic audiences and rural areas, Carey said.
