DeLAND, Fla. -- A 59-year-old woman was arrested in Volusia County on Thursday night on allegations of breaking the arm of an infant whom she was baby-sitting.
Philimone Delgado, who lives in Deleon Springs but is not a U.S. citizen, was charged with aggravated battery on a child and knowingly giving false information to a law enforcement officer.
Deputies said Delgado lied to investigators and gave them the fake name, Maria Delesancha.
According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the parents of an 11-month-old girl took the child to Florida Hospital Orlando on Tuesday after she was crying hysterically and they noticed that her arm was deformed.
Deputies said doctors determined that the girl's arm was broken and that she had previous broken bones that appeared to be untreated and did not heal properly. A doctor said the girl's broken arm was caused by a focused and directional force and was not caused by an accident, according to deputies.
The Sheriff's Office was contacted, and the girl's parents said they didn't know how the injury could have happened. The parents said the girl was taken to Delgado's home Tuesday morning, and when the girl's father picked her up later that afternoon, she was asleep in a car seat, according to deputies.
Delgado initially told deputies that she was not the girl's baby sitter and said she did not know the girl's parents, according to deputies. She later admitted to watching the girl and said she lied because she was afraid of being deported, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Delgado also said she did not baby-sit the girl the day she was injured, but an investigation showed otherwise, deputies said. Delgado eventually admitted to watching the baby that day, but she refused to say when or how the infant was injured, deputies said.
A neighbor told Local 6 Delgado watches several grandchildren and always appeared to be a loving sitter. "Always out watching them. If they're out playing she is always out on the porch," the neighbor said.
Other neighbors said they've seen Delgado hit a child with a fly swatter and said another child was hit by a car outside their home on Webb Street in Deleon Springs while in Delgado's care.
Delgado was arrested and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach. She bonded out Friday afternoon.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the child's previous arm injuries.
Delgado was arrested twice in Volusia County. In 2005, she was charged with marijuana possession with the intent to sell. In 2006, she violated her probation.
