Liberty Media CEO says DirecTV sale 'possible'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PHILADELPHIA - The chief executive of Liberty Media says a purchase of its DirecTV unit by another company is possible after DirecTV is spun off.

Greg Maffei, whose Liberty Media Corp. owns a controlling stake in DirecTV Group Inc., made the comments during an interview Friday with The Associated Press. Liberty Media is combining DirecTV with its entertainment unit, then spinning them off as a separate company.

Maffei says there could be strategic reasons for phone companies to buy the satellite TV operator.

Phone companies could be interested in such a combination so they can offer video nationally along with Internet and phone services to compete with cable TV operators.

Liberty Media is based in Englewood, Colo., while DirecTV has headquarters in El Segundo, Calif.
