Myth, Ubuntu, Bev, Working Howto.
Introduction; MythTV install on Ubuntu 7.10

c/p thanks goes to dr dred
I decided to post this howto to simplify the setup of MythTV. There is a lot of information in other forums on how to do it, but the amount of information available makes it really difficult for the newcomer to sift through and find the relevant information.

Most of these instructions were cut and pasted from about 5 different sources, with a few tricks that I figured out on my own. I've also added my own comments/disclaimer to help people understand what each step is doing.

WARNING!!!!

The setup of Mythtv is not easy There are many different Linux distributions and each one has a slightly different setup. This howto is confirmed to work on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy and may work on other distros, but I can't say for sure.

It's a long and fiddly setup. There are a lot of steps and a lot of reading to do. Patience is a must!

Please don't even consider it if you haven't already already had your DVB setup working in Windows. You also need a decent knowledge of Linux and not be afraid to use the terminal. However, if you don't have a good working knowledge of Linux, you will by the time you are done here!

I'm still pretty much a noob at this, but I did get it working

So, now that I've scared you...

Why MythTV? Myth is a very sophisticated multimedia centre for Linux. On Myth's own web site they list the following features:

Basic 'live-TV' functionality. Pause/Fast Forward/Rewind "live" TV.
Support for multiple tuner cards and multiple simultaneous recordings.
The ability so set up a backend server to distribute Live TV to other computers in a network
Support for full featured and Budget cards
Support for the (very nice looking) hardware MPEG-2 decoder and TV out present on the Hauppauge PVR-350.
Completely automatic commercial detection/skipping (That's right!)
Grabs program information using xmltv.
A fully themeable menu to tie it all together.
And that's just the basic program, there is a full list of plugins allowing you to do everything from checking local weather, read live internet news feeds, Play and rip CD/DVD's, play MP3's, streaming internet media, all through a TV with a remote control. These are just a few of many available plugins.
It is even possible to set it up on a Sony Playstation, making it an easy way to connect it to your main television.
There is a list of some of the more common features with screen shots at http://www.mythtv.org/modules.php?name=MythFeatures

MythTV is made up from two different programs. The first is the backend. This is the part that receives the various information from DVB cards, local files, CD/DVD, internet etc. This gets sent to the front end, which can even be on another computer, which displays the information in an attractive GUI.
There is also a separate program called Sasc, which is the Linux equivalent to Emunation. So before you are watching TV you will actually have 3 programs working together.

But enough of me, Let's move on to the howto!
