Im looking to buy something to backup my stuff(something in the 500GB-1Tb size) and Im not too sure of what a server would do that an external harddrive cant? Something to do with accessing files even when its in another location I think? Any help?

a server or network attached storage (NAS) allows you to access your drive from any computer on the network. However moving large files on a nongigabit network can be slow.

A server naturally makes it easier for multiple computers to access the storage, while an external hard drive is usually for a single PC (although the drive could be shared). If you are looking for just backup, I recommend Mozy Online backup.http://www.mozy.com

You question can be split into several smaller ones. You don't need a server if you are the only one on the network. All you need it an external hard drive and a good back up program. I use Acronis True Image. But there are many others to choose from.I am not clear or your question of where you want to access the files from.

A server is just that! It serves information to you and anyone else you want it to serve to. An external HDD is just a device to backup your data to. Allot of external HDD's actually come with server software that you can choose to use as a protable server. Do you share files with your family or need to access files away from home? then you should really look into a server setup. There is some great free (open source) software out there for this setup. Try UBUNTU and see if it meets your needs. http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/desktopeditionIf all you need is somewhere to back up your files, then an external HDD is the way to go.
