GlobeCast Prepares Americas Operations for HD

GlobeCast said it has upgraded its high-def infrastructure and formed strategic alliances in the Americas in response to growing demand for the distribution and contribution of HDTV content between the region and the rest of the world.

For starters, the company said it installed state-of-the-art encoding and converting equipment at its broadcast center in Culver City, Calif. The new gear includes MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 HD decoders.

With the changes, GlobeCast said it now can receive and process HD signals into any international format. The company also said it can down-convert to standard definition and deliver the signal worldwide using a combination of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 HD/SD compression.

GlobeCast said the next stage of its America's HD push will be the upgrade of its facility in Sunrise, Fla., to offer HD playout and origination. When that happens, the company's Americas operation will be fully HD capable.
