A teenager is in custody after a 66-year-old man was stabbed repeatedly in the head in east-end Toronto in an apparent robbery attempt.

The man, who was stabbed multiple times in the head and arms, and hit with an iron bar, is in serious condition in hospital Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. ET Tuesday in the Victoria Village neighborhood near Eglinton Avenue East and Bermondsey Road.

Toronto police believe the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, tried to rob the man in the hallway of a building on Eccleston Drive, and then drove away in the man's car.

The car was driven into a pole, and the suspect fled on foot, police said. He was arrested shortly afterwards.

Police have the teenager in custody. He is recovering from minor injuries.

It is not clear if any charges have been laid.
