Do you have the Vs pro, the 9000hd or the PVR? I believe the 7000pvr is able to have a hard drive installed in it.

VIEWSAT PVR7000
The long anticipated VIEWSAT PVR7000 is finally here! It took us a little longer to release the PVR than we anticipated. We wanted to make sure that the customer would be getting a high quality product. This is a dual tuner PVR! Any standard IDE hard drive can be easily installed through the front access panel. This new addition to the Viewsat product line is sure to be a winner.
The 9000 was the first to come out. Has a Atsc tuner for ant. HD and epg compatable on atsc. I prefer the 9000.. the Max is the new verson, smaller and cheaper .. there are video differences as well, 9000 supports the Yellow and the red and white for audio and the MAX does not.
Therefore the max is the cheaper version of the 9000 with a lot of the workings they are a little different but the end result is the same.
The 7000 is not a HD unit. it is special and made to PVR so any hard drive of any size can be added by the front bay of hte unit. There is no best system.. there are a lot better recievers then a viewsat but viewsat has some of the best support so buy a better reciever with crap support or a less then best reciever with great support.
The VS7k accepts only IDE hard drive though I have tried a SATA to PATA convertor that will work with a SATA hard drives, it is too very cramp to fit in the hard drive tray though. The largest IDE drive I have found is 750gb that should be good enough for 750 hours of recording... you will also need a computer to format the drive to be fat32 I used swissknife tool to do the trick. I also have a SV 360p that accepts ext. hd but it is really crappy compared to the vs7k full of features that is not avail on sv360.
