There have been many posts that people's boxes read "----" on the display board and this site is excellent and has the instructions on how to fix these boxes. You just need to look around. There is also another issue that I have ran into and it is not the "----" on the display it is nothing on the display screen. I found for me this happened as I was updating the receiver with the main.pgm file via the serial cable and turned it off too soon. The fuse is fine and I checked it. There is nothing on the display at all and hooking up the serial cable won't do anything b/c it doesn't recogonize the box. After talking to Viewsat they said in these situations you might just have to send it back. It sounds like it may be the TSOP chip or something. There are two things that people have mentioned to me but don't really work. I tried cloning the receiver witha live working one, but once agin it stays at 0% as I try the Main S/W update. Someone else mentioned to try to JTag the TSOP chip. I don't have one of these cords and am not sure it would work (plus couldn't find step by step instructions). Does anyone have any advice for us witha really dead Ultra not just a "----" on the screen. Thanks ...this site is great.

If you tried to reinstall the original factory bin, and you still get nothing, then it is most likely that you fried your tsop. Don't bother jtagging it, unless you are a good solderer, you will not be able to replace the tsop chip. I have been in the electronic repair business for over twenty five years, and this chip has many contacts and it is hard to do. Best advice is send it back to veiwsat pay the $100 bucks and they will replace it for you. I know a hard lesson learned.

Hi,

Just want to know how to fix Viewsat Ultra when the box shows '----' on the screen.

thanks

Try installing the foctory bin on the reciever useing the 9 pin null modem serial cable that came with your unit. The software can be downloaded at http://www.viewsatusa.com

And to quote Domando1069, "If you tried to reinstall the original factory bin, and you still get nothing, then it is most likely that you fried your tsop. Don't bother jtagging it, unless you are a good solderer, you will not be able to replace the tsop chip."

-open the settings and make sure to match the com port you are useing, it is different on all computers
-connect your viewsat to the serial 9 pin cable
-plug in your viewsat
-turn your viewsat off by means of the switch behind the unit
-click PC -> STB on the loader program
-turn on your viewsat
-*****Wait until it has re-set and fully installed, should display 0000 *****

If it does nothing, then I will re-quote Domando1069 for the 2nd time
