Hi guys, I have a Viewsat Ultra that turned out to be a clone. Its TSOP chip got fried by an ECM. My repair guy (after 1.5 months of waiting) could only get a Viewsat Extreme TSOP. So now my STB is effectively an Extreme.

Is it at all possible to resume using the USB port for program updates, via my flash drive?

If yes, how??

The USB Port was the reason I bought the "Ultra" in the first place.

Can't stand disconnecting and reconnecting the STB each time I need to load a prog!!

I would say No. The ultra has the SW to make the usb function work. If it is moded to an extreme then kiss yer USB goodbye. It's not a matter of the usb port it's the actual drivers is the software to make your usb drive work.

Kinda like not loading your video drivers for your computer and then wanting to change it to 16 bit gfx. Only way to amke this work again is to buy a real VS.. If i bought a clone i would have tosses it back where i got it (the store) and repoterd them to VS. I also would not have spent the time and modded a close to work again, Spending so much time and money on a clone and not to support viewsat is just silly. Morral of the story is with a clone you get what you get even if you were tricked in buying one. Just wait until Viewsat installes there close kill routines again in there programs again.

Thanks Angel... seems I will have to cut my losses and move on! I understand that either the Captiveworks or the Coolsat boxes are usually the first boxes to have new (code) files ready whenever there's a code change.

Is this true?
Apart from the quick code availablilty, is there any other good reason for me (whichever box must have USB or SD Card port) to buy one of these boxes (as a replacement to my cloned Viewsat)??

There is a fine line to different boxes. A viewsat guy is oviously going to say viewsat is the way to go and so is a coolsat. I have used coolsats and not really fond of them altho a sonicview started it's life as a viewsat clone and then matured into a box of it's own. Advantages of the sonicview, 100% better software in the reciever. I have used them and like the interface and the general look / feel and speed of the reciever. Coolsats I find are a little harder to use, not as user friendly as a viewsat and sonicview.

As for the software updates I used to be a firm viewsat suporter for software but these days it really doesn't matter. I will say last year there were only 2 boxes running. Viewsat and coolsat, coolsat was running with a card reader w/ a rom 102 in it to beat the sub 13 (i think thats what it was called) code in the ecm. Viewsat was the ONLY one to be running cardless. So whatever you choose buy from a orginal dealer and not ebay. If the price is too good to be true them it most likely is.

Check out Sky high here. Http://www.skyhighelectronics.com Viewsat and sonicview dealer.

Clones are only made from popular recievers, for example who would want to clone a digiwave FTA reciever? Back in the day pansat 2500's had pantec 2500 but most people learned there lesson then about buying clones. So now they try to pass off a cheap product as an orginal.

Mechanicaly and internaly they use the same board, and microchips but where the difference is in the software. Software can appear to LOOK the same but a huge difference in the actuall codeing. Myself when i test i have backups of all my eproms and if the reciever fryes i don't worrie about it.

BE a SMART buyer. :)
