I just bought a 40" flatscreen. The picture coming from the vs through component cables is terrible. Any ideas or thoughts on how to improve the picture quality?
I have an ultra!!
The reason why your picture looks like poo poo is becasue your TV set has a high native resolution. The lower the native resolution the better the picture looks on NON-HD becasue the tv doesn't try to make it look good. Native resolutation is the res. that the TV likes to display without forceing a mode on it. The only real way to make it look good is to Only run in HD, or a new set with a better res. Below is a breakdown..
i = interlace scan (Singel scan)
p= progressive scan (Double scaned)
480i - standard tv channels, non hd
540i - Standard tv, DVD, Svideo, non hd, component DVD
720p - 720 lines of resolution 720 fill lines (double scan)<- BEV hd brodcast
1080i - 1080 lines, Dish HD brodcast
1080p - 1080 lines, 1080 fill lines, (double scan) dish brodcast with there special recievers.
If your TV has a native of 720, then everything below it looks like garbage. When you look in a store, all tvs are runing on HD. Since hd is the standard they adjust the brightness and the colours in the menu to make you buy the set with the most about of markup to make them money. This is called Leader. When looking for a set always ask to see it in analog mode and then you will see the sets true picture.
My panasonic plasma has a native of 540i so it has a great picture in 480 and 1080p
Hope that helps..
