Beware Beware

As you may or may not know, Bell TV & DN are transitioning from Nagra 2 (the current encryption method) to Nagra 3. In fact, it appears that Bell TV may almost be complete as they have now switched a select few channels to Nagra 3 only and it is just a matter of a short time until we start to see more and more channels making this switch. Once all channels have been switched to Nagra 3, there is a very distinct possibility that you will not be able to view them on your FTA receiver. This is not to say that you will never be able to view them, but no one knows the future. FTA receivers could become capable of decrypting in a day, a week, a month…….hell it may never be possible.

It has been noticed over the past week or so that several of the members of this site only have Bell TV for their television viewing. If you are in this boat, it is time for you to start to consider what options you have for when the time comes that Bell TV viewing on your FTA receiver is no more.

Subscribe to your Local Cable/Satellite Provider

Option numero uno, IMO, is to sub. I also believe that everyone should carry a sub all the time but that is another story. This is the best way to ensure that you will be able to watch TV. Yeah, it costs money, but nothing in life is free.

To lessen the cost, share the sub with 1 or more family members or friends. All you have to do is activate multiple receivers on one account (you will most likely have to do the activation from the home that the account is registered to), then distribute the receivers to the friends and family members that have agreed to share the sub with you. Beware though, providers get suspicious if more than 4 receivers are on the same account. Sometimes they can call you and ask you to provide the Location ID (an internal receiver number that can be accessed by going in to the receiver’s menu, and changes regularly) off all of the receivers on your account. If you cannot provide those IDs off all receivers on the account at the time of the call, the provider will most likely shut down the programming on the ones that you don’t provide.

Re-Aim your dish to DN

Fairly simple to do, go to dishpointer.com or satcalulator.freehostia.com to get the coordinates on where to point your dish, climb up on the roof, re-aim that sucker and continue watching TV. This however is a band-aid solution. As I said earlier, DN is also doing this switch to Nagra 3 so with this option you may only be putting off the inevitable.

Purchase a motorized system

This one is not for the faint of heart. This requires some skill and a lot of patience but the result is very rewarding once you can say you have done it yourself. And besides, this is what your FTA receiver was really designed for. You’re not going to be picking up those premium movie channels or PPVs but there is some quality viewing nonetheless. Check out lyngsat.com to see what other sats are out there for your viewing pleasure.

Purchase a single FTA dish

A little cheaper than going the motorized way, you can purchase and install a single FTA dish and point to 123W or 97W. You only get one sat with this option and would have to re-aim anytime you want something different, but, cheaper and a little easier to install. Again, check lyngsat.com for programming options carried on those or any other sat.

Purchase a OTA VHF/UHF Antenna

While this option does not give a great variety channels, it will give you the basic network channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox).

Do nothing at all

This one is the procrastinator’s wet dream. Not recommended by me though. Be forewarned, that if you only have Bell TV for television viewing and you go with this option, YOU WILL experience a period of no television. Hopefully you have loaded up the HDD of the PVR, have downloaded a bunch of movies and shows, or have that movie rental membership card in hand.

This post is not intended as doom & gloom or to scare anyone. The fact of the matter remains, there WILL BE downtime experienced once the providers switch to Nagra 3. How much downtime? No one knows. However, if you are prepared to accept it, and are prepared with a backup plan, the downtime won’t be near as painful for you compared to those that do nothing.
